2009 COMMUNITY GRANT AWARDS
|
The mission of the Ohio County Community Foundation (OCCF) is to build, manage and distribute a lasting source of
charitable funds for Ohio County. OCCF fulfills this mission by assisting donors to establish and build endowments that
provide charitable funds for Ohio County. Anyone can make a contribution to endowment funds established within the
Foundation. All contributions to endowment funds are permanently endowed and invested by OCCF. Only the interests
from the funds are distributed in the form of grants. This allows the funds to grow indefinitely to increase the capacity for
the funds to further impact the community through future grant distributions. Grants are awarded to non-profit organizations
benefiting the residents of Ohio County, in the areas of Community Development, Education, Scholarships, Health, Human
Services and Cultural Affairs.
Grants awards for the first grant cycle of 2009 were presented by the Ohio County Community Foundation to Non-profit
organizations whose projects and programs benefit Ohio County. Each applicant could request up to $3,000.
The grants for Grant Cycle I were awarded from the unrestricted endowment funds from the Ohio County Today &
Tomorrow Endowment Fund. The Ohio County Today & Tomorrow Endowment Fund was established within the Ohio
County Community Foundation by the City of Rising Sun and Ohio County to provide charitable grants to fund the most
pressing needs in Ohio County.
The following non-profit organizations were awarded Community Grants:
The Ohio County Rescue was awarded $3,000 to purchase updated training materials and supplies for required training
to abstain certifications and licenses.
The City of Rising Sun Clerk’s Office was awarded $3,000 to hold the 2009 Indiana Association of Cities and Towns
Leadership Conference in Rising Sun for elected officials from around the state.
The City of Rising Sun for the Historic Downtown Program was awarded $1,250 to present an Energy Efficiency
Workshop entitled “How to Reduce Your Home’s Heating and Cooling Costs: It’s Not the Windows” given by William
W. Hill, Ph.D., retired professor from Ball State University College of Architecture and Planning. The workshop will
educate businesses and residents of Ohio County how to reduce energy costs.
The Dearborn County Social Council DBA RSVP was awarded $3,000 to mail We Care Packages to military
personnel serving our country overseas.
The City of Rising Sun Mayor’s Office was awarded $2,500 toward the 2009 America in Bloom City Beautification
Project.
The Rising Sun Church of Christ was awarded $3,000 to purchase exercise equipment for the Family Life Center
Workout Room Project.
The Dearborn –Ohio County Prosecutor’s Office was awarded $3,000 toward funding for the Special Crimes Unit
Assistant Program to provide specialized training and networking for local law enforcement officers including Ohio County.
The Southeastern Indiana Independent Living Center was awarded $2,395 to fund the annual membership for the
Q-90 program which will allow the center to reach out to more disabled individuals in Ohio County and surrounding
counties with its services and upgrade record keeping tasks.
The City of Rising Sun for the Rising Sun Navy Bean Fall Festival was awarded $3,000 to purchase a mascot
costume to promote the festival and use during festival activities.
The Rising Sun Ohio County Parks & Recreational Board was awarded $3,000 to purchase tables and chairs for
the Schroeder Educational/Recreational Center currently under construction at the renovated Ohio County Fairgrounds.
The Dearborn County Hospital was awarded a grant in the amount of $3,000 to perform screenings for Ohio County
women during the DCH Screening Breast MRI Study.
The Ohio County 911 Communication Center was awarded $1,454.00 to purchase the needed software and
equipment to perform upgrades to their current radios to allow radio communication with emergency agencies in
surrounding counties.
The American Cancer Society was awarded $3,000 toward the 2009 Dearborn/Ohio County Relay for Life event to
raise funds for cancer awareness and research.
The Ohio County Historical Society was awarded $3,000 to build two new exhibit cases to replace used cases worn
out over years of use.
Grants for Grant Cycle II were awarded from the unrestricted endowment funds from the Ohio County Today &
Tomorrow Endowment Fund established by the City of Rising Sun and Ohio County to fund the most pressing needs of
Rising Sun/Ohio County.
A portion of grants were funded from the Gene Siekman Endowment Fund, the Amado Mauricio, M.D. Memorial
Endowment Fund, the Dr. Art Jay Community Endowment Fund and the Galbreath Vineyard Memorial Endowment Fund
and are listed as such.
The following non-profit organizations were awarded Community Grants:
The Rising Sun High School for the Prom Committee was awarded $3,000 toward the 2010 Rising Sun High
School Prom.
The City of Rising Sun was awarded $975 to purchase dog houses for the Ohio County Animal Shelter.
The Southeastern Indiana Independent Living Center was awarded $586.51 to purchase a digital camera and office
phone for the center.
The American Legion, Noah O’Bannon Post 0059 was granted $3,000 to purchase new ceremonial guns to replace
worn out guns used for the past sixty years during ceremonies, funerals and community events. A portion of the grant was
funded from the Gene Siekman Memorial Endowment Fund. The fund was established by Angel Siekman Clements and
Lane Siekman in memory of Gene Siekman who served on various boards and committees within Ohio County.
The Riley Children’s Foundation was awarded $500 to continue the Reach Out and Read Program at the Rising Sun
Medical Center where children receive a free book during their wellness check-up.
The Dearborn and Ohio County American Red Cross received a grant in the amount of $2,500 toward disaster relief
aid for Ohio County residents. A portion of this grant was funded by the Amado Mauricio, M.D. Memorial Endowment
Fund. The fund was established by Jeremy Dilts, grandson of Nancy Mauricio and the late Dr. Mauricio, in memory of his
grandfather who was a well-known doctor in Rising Sun.
The Rising Sun Rotary Club for Boy Scout Pack 650 received a grant in the amount of $3,000 toward adult education
and training for pack leaders, scholarships and camp expenses.
The Rising Sun Volunteer Fire Department was awarded $3,000 to preserve the fire bell from the old fire station that
rang in the past to indicate a fire.
Voices of Indiana Limited was awarded $750 to provide scholarships to Ohio County students wishing to participate in
the voice program. A portion of this grant was funded by the Dr. Art Jay Community Endowment Fund. The fund was
established by the Ohio County Community Foundation in honor of Dr. Jay served as a past Board Member. Dr. Jay and
his wife enjoy the cultural arts.
The Rising Sun Ohio County Parks & Recreational Board was awarded $2,977.20 to purchase security cameras
due to recent vandalism of the city park.
LifeTime Resources was awarded $3,000 to apply for a Community Development Block Grant in the amount of
$125,000 to provide minor repairs, home modifications and/or energy efficiency improvements for six homes in Ohio
County.
The Learning Tree of Ohio County Inc. was awarded $3,000 to purchase school supplies and back to school needs for
needy children in Ohio County.
The Purdue Extension – Ohio County was awarded $800 to build a raised garden at the Waters of Rising Sun to
allow residents to grow their own fresh vegetables.
The Farmers and Hunters Feeding the Hungry was awarded $3,000 pay for processing fees for meat supplied by
local farmers and hunters to distribute to needy Ohio County residents through the Rising Sun Church of Christ Christian
Outreach Food Pantry. A portion of this grant was funded by the Galbreath Vineyard Memorial Endowment Fund. The
fund was established in memory of Ralph & Evelyn Galbreath, who farmed and owned and operated the Vineyard Golf
Course in Switzerland County, by their children.
The Boy Scouts of America: Hoosier Trails Council was awarded $1,500 to implement a Career Day at Ohio
County Elementary Middle School.
The Ohio County Public Library was awarded $2640 toward the purchase of lap top computers for computer classes.
